Later An'jhali overhears a group of Faceless Tei'kaliath talking about how she doesn't understand what a major problem not having an organized fighting force and that the clan should form a militia using Tir'ay training. An'jhali wonders to herself if they realize that the clan's Tir'ay masters are all on other duties.

The scouts corner the two runaway refugees they located and Quel interrogates them. One of them complained that the reason they left was because they felt they had been promised a new home and a new land and that in return all they got were a few tents in a barren cavern. She also felt that An'jhali was keeping them from going to the bright city (Chel'el'Sussoloth) and finally added that she felt that An'jhali was not the Ill'haress her mother was.
